I always thought CITA were OK, but never took to them fully until their debut as Guild Of Ages.
One was a great album and a jump in style and maturity from their previous two albums.
On their new and fourth album in total, Guild Of Ages continue on the pat that One set, with a couple of new twists, but nothing that will make as much as impression as the last album did.
The guys seem to have moved into a more progressive direction, without fully committing to it, as occasionally they sit back comfortably into an AOR vein (Wish I Was There) and other times straight ahead hard rock (Their cover of Hungry Like A Wolf).
The album definitely follows the style introduced with their change to Guild Of Ages, but I can't help but feel there is a little spark missing from the record.
Nevertheless, another solid album from the guys, but one that fails to make the leap that One made from their CITA albums.
Let It Go opens the album with a solid thump and a better pace than one usually expects from the guys. A solid rhythm and some good vocals.
Change (Hey You) is more the mid paced rock that CITA and Guild are known for. This is a moody rocker with a cool chorus. The pace is pretty laid back throughout.
Bring The Revolution On is more mid paced GOA style rock. The chorus blends a little too much into the rest of the song.
Save Me Tonight is better. A big moody song with hallmark dramatics and a more powerful feel to it. The song builds from a soft start into an over the top power rock song with a little of that progressive feel. Just over 7 minutes in length!
Jump In The Fire again has that dramtic feel to it, this time with a heavier drum influence. Plenty of those harmony vocals in this classy song.
Wish That I Was There is a top class song, being that it is written by Jon Cain and John Waite, but I feel it is a strange choice of tune for the guys. Sure they carry it off with ease, but light weight feel good AOR ballads aren't their normal fare.
Set Me Free is another big moody ballad, but a proper GOA style power ballad. Again it builds and ends with a great Eastern / Indian influence that adds character.
When You Run Away rocks out again. Just in time too. Well paced and more good strong riffs. Good chorus from this tune that could have been lifted from the last album with ease.
Waiting For The Dawn is typical mid paced rock.
Now there will no doubt be some debate over this one, but the inclusion of a cover of Duran Duran's Hungry Like The Wolf is brilliant! Straight ahead rock and a little heavier than the original - this will be loved by some and hated by others.
I love it! Very cool...
Basically Vox Dominatas sees the guys tread the boards a little and will appeal to already established fans with ease, but may fail to pick any new ones up this time around.
