Robin George is one of AOR's most cultish cult figures! He is chiefly known for his breakthrough high-tech AOR solo album Dangerous Music and then several years later as part of the due in the one off project Notorious.
Robin also had a hand in co-writing and producing a couple of tunes on the Highlander 2 soundtrack.
Since then, not much!
But here is a brand new solo album! It's not quite Dangerous Music, but you will never top any record with a 15 year history.
Rock Of Ageists may not bring many new fans to this unique singer/songwriters talents, but I hope it does get a look in. I guess that if it alone appealed to all those with copies of his debut album, then George will still be doing well.
This is everything that an established fan would be looking forward to, me included.
That said, if high-tech pop rock dies it for you and you have in recent times cast an ear towards Savage Garden or Invertigo, then check this out - this is the master of the genre at work.
The album flows beautifully as a collection of songs. That's something Robin George has always done well. Check the Notorious album for a smooth ass piece of AOR.
This is no different; Learn The Dance and especially Crying Diamonds are wonderful danceable pop rock/AOR in the smoothest vein.
And the classic ballad Haunted is resurrected here. This song was previously covered by Glenn Hughes for the Highlander 2 soundtrack.
Ok, so Hughes obviously has the better voice, but having written it, the song fits George like a glove.
BOTTOM LINE: Robin George delivers exactly what fans of his work expected and hoped for. This is a solid album of high-tech pop rock with an even mix of pleasant mid-tempo pop rockers and lush AOR tunes.
The album features an even mix of guitar and keyboards and picks up where Notorious left off nearly 10 years ago....
