Japanese guitarist Jun Senoue and American singer Johnny Gioeli paired up to record songs for the soundtracks Sega had commissioned Jun to record. Jun works for Sega full time composing music, with has seen him work with Eric Martin, Tony Harnell, Ted Poley and of course Gioeli. Inbetween his instrumental tracks for a series of racing games, vocal tracks were also recorded, which was the basis for a release under the Sons Of Angels moniker a couple of yeas back.
This is somewhat different from that release, dropping the instrumental tracks and adding the harder to find tracks featuring Poley and Harnell.
But the base of the album is still a series of 9 hard rock songs with Gioeli on vocals. While it's a must for all fans of Gioeli and those with a penchant for smart, hard riffing guitarists; it's also not your average melodic hard rock release.
That comes from most of the songs being specifically written for use within the confines of a computer game, therefore not translating as well when listening to them as straight up rockers.
The lyrics are obviously all about power, speed and revving those engines, not to mention the thrill of victory etc.
It works ok, thanks to the powerhouse vocals of Gioeli and the Satriani meets Eddie Van Halen style of Senoue.
But you do have to take some of the songs in the context of which they were originally intended.

The Bottom Line
Keep in mind the theme of the record and the original use of the songs and you will find some enjoyable high octane rockers. But it's safe to say none of the tracks featured represent the finest work of the singers involved, although Jun's guitar playing has to be singled out for special mention.
A good compilation for die hard fans - representing far better value than that of the original Japanese release.
Based on the sound quality here, a second purpose written album due to be started this year between the pair will be more anticipated.
