Live In Tokyo was recorded on the Hughes / Turner tour of Japan earlier this year, undertaken in support of their debut album together.
I loved the album and it's safe to say if you did too, then this album is an essential purchase.
This album is not only a chance for the guys to loosen up and rock out with the tracks they recorded together, it's a snapshot of rock n roll history, with the guys both delving back into their pasts.
With tracks from Rainbow, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, not to mention some solo classics also, this 14 track album has a hell of a lot to offer.
To hear a 9 minute plus version of Purple's Mistreater, with Hughes in amazing form is cool. But then there's a couple of gems from Joe Lynn Turner's career – King Of Dreams (a favorite Purple track) and Rainbow's Street Of Dreams.
Add the obligatory Stormbringer and some of the best tracks from the HTP album (Devil's Road, Ride The Storm) and you have a great classic hard rock album performed live.
Of special note is the partnership between Hughes and Turner. The guys both swap vocals back and forth, often sharing each others parts and always providing harmony support. They have a chemistry that really works and almost know what each other is thinking on stage. Great to see two guys that have shared a lot of parallels in their careers teaming up so well.
Added bonus is the studio Japanese bonus track Against The Wall - a very good track from the debut album.

The Bottom Line
|
A good hard rocking, non tampered with live album.
This is everything I love in a live album – raw, 100% live, great vibes and importantly a great sound.
Above all - a great track selection for fans fo classic hard rock.
Good art, good running time (for a live CD) and great track selection.
