Rock The Bones is the brand new compilation sampler from Frontiers Records - with CD 1 highlighting the best releases from the label over the past 12 months and most of CD 2 showcasing what we have to look forward to in the next 12.
As far as these melodic label samplers go, they really are good value, but this one - at nearly 40 tracks at mid price - is one of the best yet on offer.
CD 1, will be familiar to most - so let's take a look at the new tracks on CD 2.
Unruly Child - King Of Tragedy is a good example of the style of the new album - dark, moody and a mix of the two before it. A good touch of Lou Gramm in the new vocalist.
Urban Tale - More classy high-tech from the great Scandinavian band. A little more uptempo than the debut, but very familiar.
On The Rise - Beat of Your Heart Europe's answer to Nelson - this album will be huge, because as good as this song is, there are even better to come. A contender for AOR album of the year in 2003.
Drive She Said - What's It Gonna Take Wow, the guys are back and they have hardly skipped a beat from the classic sound that gained them a cult following in the late 80's. Great to hear Mark Mangold's keys in fine form.
Talisman - Outta My Way Classic Talisman groove hard rock with this track, a tougher and more modern sound than the recent JSS solo album. Album is sure to be huge.
Khymera - Who's Gonna Love You Tonight Another big 80's AOR release - featuring Kansas vocalist Steve Walsh and Italian Daniele Liverani. Walsh sounds a bit worse for wear vocally, but the atmosphere and moodiness of this song means the album will be highly anticipated.
Ambition - Waiting In My Dreams One listen to the golden tones of Thom Griffin with Joe Vana on backing/harmony vocals shows you how suited the pair are together and why Mecca was such a monster release. A race for AOR album of the year between this and On The Rise?
Ramos - The Dream Is Still Alive The new Josh Ramos project is not too far musically from Two Fires - at least that's what this preview suggests. I'm a fan of Josh and this is a big lighter-in-the-air 80's FM radio ballad. I'll be looking for even better when the album comes, but a good track nevertheless.
Green - I Still Love This is an interesting number... Good pop rock, with a European twist, again I'll have to hear more before I make a decision. Certainly some potential and an interesting mix of pomp, AOR and progressive.
Mysterell - Don't Ever Stop The production quality is a highlight for the first time since the Ambition track. A great Starship/Def Leppard 80's style melodic rock track.
Crush 40 - Into The Wind A soundtrack to a Sega racing game. And it sounds like it. Not as musically intense as Gioeli's previous work, but an ok collection of songs highlighted by this easy go lucky melodic rocker.
Michael Sembello's Heavy Weather - Love Don't Live Here Anymore Thankfully not a cover of that awful song. This original demo makes this album one of the one's to watch in 2003. Sembello is fabulous voice and rules this track. Looking forward to more of this!
Mickey Thomas - Love Can Save The Day Mickey also sounds in great voice and I like this ballad a lot. One can only hope the album comes sooner rather than later. My only fear is that the album will be ballad heavy.
Zion - The Sky Is Falling The return of the great Feddy Curci. Judging by this, there won't be any problem shipping a stack of units for this new release by the former Alias singer. He sounds great, as does this melodic rock song.

The Bottom Line
A great collection of tunes and an excellent preview of what is to come in 2003.
Of all the new songs, the best are On The Rise, Michael Sembello, Ambition and Zion.
Only thing I could have wishes for would have been a couple more rock tracks as previews, rather than the greater balance being ballads. Time will tell what the albums all stack up to be!
